Heritage-Our Proposal

Preservation Feasibility

Saving a recognizable component of a sports facility has been done before.

At Cleveland's League Park, where Joe DiMaggio hit safely in his 56th game in 1941, an external wall similar to Yankee Stadium's Gate 2 has been retained. The picturesque ticket office located at the former home plate area still exists, as well.

Note the structural supports that were added to the back of the wall. Similar supports would be used for Gate 2. It may be possible to use some of the original structural steel columns for the wall support system, which would add to the Gate's historic value.

Buffalo did something similar with the old War Memorial Stadium, by saving one of its gates, and then transforming the rest of the stadium into a public park.

In Pittsburgh, notice that the original Forbes Field centerfield wall and distance markers, along with the flagpole, are still in place on the grounds of the University of Pittsburgh.
A further success has been recently achieved in Detroit with the preservation of a major portion of Tiger Stadium.
